While 2013 may have been the year of the super hero film, 2014 should yield a top vintage of animated feature films for the whole family. Pixar leads the way, with DreamWorks not far behind, but there are some other surprises set for this year. Rumours have been rife and in 2014 we’re going to see the eventual release of many films we’ve been talking about for a long, long time.
Mr. Peabody & Sherman – release date 7th March 2014
DreamWorks are going back to the 60s to reimagine of Characters from everyone’s favourite all American cartoon The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. This labour of love has been in the pipeline for years and expectations are high at DreamWorks that this can be a worldwide smash. Featuring the voices of Ty Burrell (the Dad in ‘Modern Family’), Max Charles, Stephan Colbert, Lesley Mann and Ariel Winter. The release will be accompanied by a DreamWorks short featuring the actual Rocky and Bullwinkle characters and it will be used to test the water for a full length feature of the iconic characters.
Muppets Most Wanted – release date 21st March 2014
After the critical and commercial success of the 2011 ‘The Muppets’ it was only a matter of time before Disney green-lighted an eighth instalment in ‘The Muppets’ anthology. When the Muppets take on a European tour successfully selling out theatres in Berlin, Madrid and London they come across Kermit’s doppelganger Constantine, a frog with wicked intent and the Muppets get caught up in an International crime caper. As you’d expect all hell breaks loose. Influenced by the crime capers of the 60s like the Pink Panther and such but no panthers, just a frog, a pig, a bear…
Island of Lemurs: Madagascar – release date 4th April 2014
Wild lemurs on the Island of Madagascar face extinction in the next five years. This is a film dedicated to the wonderful uniqueness of the species and a look at the attempts of a team of scientist who are doing everything they can to ensure their future. Narrated by Morgan Freeman and captured in stunning HD this is an IMAX release that is educational as it is a glorious visual spectacle for the whole family.
Bluesky Studios return with the sequel to Rio bringing back the all-star voice cast of Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, will.i.am Jamie Foxx, George Lopez, Tracy Morgan, Jemaine Clement, Leslie Mann, Rodrigo Santoro, and Jake T. Austin. The first was a success but the sequel is times to come out a few months before the World Cup to capitalise on the hype of all things Brazilian. Just as the first the second is set in Rio de Janiero.
Legends of OZ: Dorothy’s Return – release date 9th May 2014
A 3D CGI animation based on the L. Frank Baum’s Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the source of inspiration for the 1956 movie and the more recent ‘Oz the Great and the Powerful’. Basically the film takes up where the original leaves off, only when Dorothy returns to Earth she finds it devastated. She finds a way to return the Oz only to find that her old friends the Scarecrow (Dan Aykroyd), Tin Man (Kelsey Grammer), Cowardly Lion (Jim Belushi) and the entire Land of Oz are all in grave danger. Together they embark on another weird and wonderful adventure where Dorothy meets a whole host of new friends.
