Sitton's is your typical 24 four hour diner, complete with shifty characters sitting at the counter, waitresses who have seen it all and surprise you with wry humor. They seem to have undergone some sort of facelift, which is typical of any aging Hollywood-adjacent grand dame. She's weathered a lot, the old gal.
Of course, being Hollywood-adjacent (it is North Hollywood after all...or do you prefer NoHo Arts?) there must be the requisite photos of celebs on the wall. But these aren't pictures of that lady who played the car rental agent in that movie with the guy who meets the girl and then crazy things happen like all those pictures on the wall at your mechanic's shop-no, no, they are old Hollywood black and whites. Basically you can dine while the ever smirking faces of Hollywood's Golden Era beam down upon you. Even better, the sound system had on the old standars, so we got to eat our greasy spoon stuffs while hearing "Moon River" which was, admittedly, kind of nice. It also was a vast improvement to having to hear the sound from the television sets that are always abuzz at Sitton's-one right at the counter and one on the lovely outdoor patio, where, smokers, of course, you remain SOL.
Ah, the menu. This is what you've seen before. It's a classic throwback, except for maybe the prices. Meals here are now averaging in the -12 range, which means, kids, save your babysitting money if you want to gorge on a plate of fries after this weekend's house party. My favorite categories are the Captain's Table (it must be read aloud in a piratey voice, please) for seafood plates (and, hell, no, I don't trust the seafood here) and the Slim Liners, which is a very old school way of saying dieter's plates...mmmm, yes, I'll have a ground beef patty and some cottage cheese with a bit of jello. Delish!
For those who can't resist (aka my dining companion on my most recent visit) they do offer a selection of beer and wine. I stuck to a Root Beer, because I ordered a burger, and, to heed our waitress' sage advice, "Don't mix wine and Root Beer." Yes ma'am!
My friend had an item I've had before and have much love for...the classic Tuna Melt. She said the Rye bread is what sold her on it. She also appreciated its innate greasiness, and gobbled all but one tiny shred of crust up. Hey man, it's a tuna melt!
