A 12-inch pipe dating back to 1929 ruptured near the intersection of Melrose and Vermont avenues, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said.

The incident was reported about 4:47 a.m. and resulted in the flooding of at least three underground residential garages. Meanwhile, a river of water was flowing along a buckled Vermont Avenue.

Firefighters responded to the scene and were pumping water out of a subterranean garage in the nearby 600 block of New Hampshire Avenue, where about six cars were trapped by water, said Erik Scott, spokesman for the Los Angele Fire Department.

No evacuations were ordered, nor were any injuries reported, Scott said.

LADWP workers also responded to the area. Water service was shut down and was expected to be restored about 4 p.m., the agency said.

Earlier, about 3 a.m., an 8-inch water main burst open in the 5500 block of Melrose Avenue, according to the LADWP. The location is almost two miles west of the second incident.

All lanes were closed on Melrose Avenue between Gower Street and Beachwood Driver, near Paramount Studios.
